DIY Home Improvement

Coming home everyday to a home that is falling apart can be very discouraging. Don’t get discouraged because you are able to do improvements to a home that are cost effective and don’t take a lot of time. Use these tips to upgrade your home!

Avoid making expensive renovations based on personal tastes. Spending $1,000 a tile on your bathroom may seem like a good plan but the odds are if you eventually sell, you will not recoup that money. If the change is not something that can be appreciated by someone other than you, consider doing something different.

When it comes to home improvement, consider purchasing quality products in stead of cheaper ones, and this will result in a much higher return on your investment. While you may save money initially by the cost of the parts, their durability may be much lesser than those of higher quality. An example of this would be buying a quality granite counter top instead of Formica.

Choose wallpaper patterns carefully. Avoid using overpowering patterns in small spaces; conversely, using a bold design in a very large room will make it appear cozier. Never use a patterned wallpaper if you have patterned carpet or window coverings. For a room full of awkward corners and recesses, pick a wallpaper with a random design that the eye doesn’t tend to follow. This will help to disguise any imperfections in the walls.

If you can afford it, go for hard wood floors and stay away from laminate. Laminate looks almost like real wood and is easy to care for, but it cannot be refinished. 10 to 20 years down the road, yourself or a new owner will have to replace the floor instead of just having it refinished.

In any home with original wood floors, the homeowner considering home improvement projects, should avoid replacing the floors, at all cost. The older a wood floor is, the less likely it is that it can be replaced with an equally attractive floor. It is much better to refinish existing wood floors. Even in cases of the most extreme damage, laying a new floor over the original one is preferable to removing it.

When having new carpet installed, do not forget to factor in the cost of new tack strips. You can save some money by removing the old carpet yourself, but leave the tack strips intact, if possible, to reduce the final cost of professional carpet installation. Installing new tack strips over concrete is more expensive than installing them over wood floors.

If you have pets, think about getting hard wood floors or titled floors as oppose to laying carpet. Pet hairs can get trapped in carpet pile and even the strongest vacuums struggle to remove them. Carpets also harbor dirt and germs, whereas hard floors can be regularly washed with disinfectant.

There is nothing that’s as great as getting home after having a hard day to a house that looks great. These tips will help you get your projects done successfully. Focus on the goal you want to achieve and steadily make progress. Just work hard and you’ll have an amazing residence in no time.
